New Porsche Cayenne review: It could save you money!

Porsche’s flagship SUV has had a mid-life facelift, and Mat’s about to see just what’s changed compared to the previous edition, while also seeing if it can compete with market leaders such as the BMW X5. When it comes to the design, it’s not overly different to the previous generation, given it’s only a mid-life facelift. Around the back, you’ll find a thinner full-length light bar, along with some updated exhaust designs. Alloy wheels now start at 20 inches instead of 19, rising up to 22 inches. But step around the front and this is where the biggest design changes can be found. There’s an all-new bonnet with creases sweeping along the front, along with an all-new bumper and grille, flanked by thinner Matrix LED headlights. All things considered, it looks pretty smart! Step inside and the traditional Porsche quality is clear to see. There’s leather throughout the cabin (although this car does have the extended leather package added!), and everything feels well-built and sturdy. There’s a fully redesigned centre console, and thankfully Porsche has retained the physical climate control buttons. There’s a fully redesigned digital dial display, and a large infotainment screen which is pretty easy to use. This edition also comes with a third screen for the front seat passenger built into the dash! There are a load of engine choices available. If you’re keeping it petrol-only, you can pick up the Cayenne S with either a 3-litre V6 with 353hp or a 4-litre twin-turbo V8 with 474hp. If you want a plug-in hybrid, two options come with the 3-litre V6 and an electric motor to deliver 470hp or 519hp. The range-topper is the Cayenne Turbo, which combined the 4-litre V8 with an electric motor to put down 739hp. There’s only a slight issue though - it’s not cheap! The entry-level Cayenne starts at around £70,000, easily rising to over £100,000 for the range-topper with a couple of options added! So is it worth it? Stick with Mat and see for yourself! 7.0-litre, 625bhp RUFFIAN Mustang + 580bhp RUFFIAN GT40
Having been obsessed with both Seventies Mustangs and hairy chested Trans-Am racing, Chris Ashton – co-founder/design director of video game company Turtle Rock Studios – wanted to hand-build himself an old school race-car for the road. But with Chris being a keen autocrosser, it had to be functional. This Mustang runs massive rubber – 315mm for the front and 345mm out back, all wrapped in super sticky Toyo R888R track tyres, which Chris had to hand form three-inch steel fender flares for the bodywork to make them fit. It also runs a carbureted LS427 – GM’s aluminium-blocked 7.0-litre beast, now making 625bhp and around 560ft lb of torque. Where the Mustang is all analogue techniques and old school knowledge, the GT40 is a different beast. It’s underpinned by modern methodology and contemporary componentry. Unsurprisingly, Chris’ handiwork, dedication and sickening obsession runs throughout the whole car. Attached to the Ford Racing 52XS V8 engine (putting out 580bhp and 445lb ft) are headers and a handmade octopus equal length exhaust. It’s a majestic Medusa-like plait of metalwork that not only looks stunning but amplifies a classic Americana noise to perfection... So, the question is - which is your favourite? We’ve got our hands on every performance version of the Model S and Model X. From the P100D through to the Plaid, these are the six quickest Teslas money can buy. The question is, just how different is their performance? Let’s start with how they compare on paper. The Model S P100D rolls up with dual motors that combine to produce 671hp and 950Nm of torque. It tips the scales at around 2,100kg. As for the Model X P100D, its two motors combine for 534hp and 755Nm, and it’s a fair bit heavier than the Model S, weighing in at around 2,500kg. Then we have the Ravens. Both come with dual motors, and both the Model S & Model X produce 778hp and 1,140Nm. However, while the Model S weighs 2,255kg, the Model X comes in at 2,552kg. Then finally we have the Plaids. Both cars have ti-motors, and both produce 1,020hp and 1,420Nm. But just like the Raven, while the Model S weighs in at 2,190kg, the Model X is a whole lot heavier, coming in at 2,464kg. So it comes as no surprise as to who the favourite is, but just how different will the performance of these cars be? There’s only one way to find out… LET’S RACE! FIRST DRIVE: Porsche Macan Turbo - As Fast As A 911 GT3!
This is Porsche’s most important launch since the Mk1 Cayenne. Why? Because even as a decade-old model at the end of its life, Porsche shifted 87,355 units of its smaller SUV in 2023, just a few hundred shy of the Cayenne. But now the second-gen Macan is going electric, and the buying public hasn’t wholly embraced EVs… Perhaps more challenging still, while the last Macan was priced from £54k to £73k in the UK, the new one starts at £70k and runs up to exactly £95,000 for the range-topping Turbo model (which doesn’t have a turbocharger anywhere near it). Sure, you get more performance, but the last Macan was a (relatively) affordable entry point into practical Porsche ownership; the new one is only £600 cheaper than a Cayenne! So it’s electric, and expensive. Can the tech impress and the dynamics dazzle enough to tempt potential buyers?
